Great piece. I sometimes feel overwhelmed with all the art that you could do, this just is a wonderful succinct piece. Thanks

Love this! I use basically the same materials and recently started using dry pastels as well. I never thought I would haha but I love the texture and versatility. I haven't tried wet chalk but I will now, thanks! I also appreciate the arrows to each different material in your illustration, I often look at other artists work and wonder how certain marks were made.

Don't worry about the button repetition, it's no big deal :)

I never thought I would either, I was given the set and it took me several years to even touch them, but now I'm so excited about them! Glad to hear you liked the arrows! I also love trying to work out how people make their work, and it was interesting for me to look back on my own work too, it reminded me of some techniques that I haven't used in a while and would like to incorporate again.

Thanks for sharing! I would love to see more posts on other materials you use (like you mentioned). Oh and your illustrations are gorgeous, the texture, hmm😍 it's just makes me want to touch it, is that weird?😂☀️

I'm so glad to hear that, thank you! I am most honoured, and also a weirdo, because in fact some textures make me want to eat them! 🤤

My most used materials are brush pens, colour pencils and neocolors II but I also use gouache (still experimenting) and oil pastels :) there's a world of art supplies and possibilities!

Ooh yes to brush pens! And oil pastels have the most delicious texture, they are like the icing of the art supply world! 🤤

Lovely post! I really love Supracolors too. Have you used the Derwent Inktense pencils? They’re my favorite for colored pencils. If they came in the range that Caran D’ache do, I’d be the happy as a clam!

Thank you! Ooh I've never tried them, I'll have to give them a go! How do they compare texture-wise to Supracolors?

Expand full comment

I believe they're even softer than Supracolors and work so well on top of wet materials. The darker shades are especially smooth! I go through a lot of dark chocolate and bark for line work over paint. The Inktense blocks are lovely for fun textures and mix nicely as well. Like the pencils, they're pretty solidly pigmented and definitely earn their name. I feel like you'll enjoy them if you like the Neocolors and pastels. Let me know what you think!

Oh amazing, they sound right up my street. Soft and pigmented is a recipe for a lovely material if you ask me. I'll definitely give them a try, thanks so much for the recommendation!

This is so great. Love the examples of different materials in your work. Neocolors are absolutely one of my favorite materials. Thank you for this post!

You newsletters are just so visually stunning! ❤️ It's a pleasure to read.

I recently got Caran d'Ache Neocolors too and I've been really loving them: they're so buttery smooth. Gouache is a favourite too: both the traditional as the acrylic ones. 🤗 Thank you for sharing your favourite supplies and how you've been using them. I'm definitely curious to learn more about your favourite sketchbooks and papers! ❤️

Thank you so much for your kind words! Mmm that is a great description of Neocolors, buttery textures in art supplies, like in pastries, are just irresistible. 🤤

What a great post, I am about to pack art supply for a summer trip. Now I will definitely pack some pastels with me and give the medium another try. Thank you for such a lovely article

Thank you! Ooh yay, I hope you have a great trip and enjoy the pastels! I would recommend keeping them in a separate pencil case/container if you can, because it can get dusty! 😅

Thanks for this great article. Massively enjoyed it. I’m using most of the materials too but not necessarily in these combinations. Want to try out something right now. 😀

I'm going to have to save this post to refer back to - SO USEFUL!! I must say, I haven't found my groove with pastels yet, but I am desperate to - I love the idea of dipping them into water! Thanks for a great post!

Louise, this was such a treat for the eyes, thank you. Have you ever been to Green & Stone in London? This post reminded me of going in there and feasting on all the incredible art supplies (only this post was safe because I couldn't accidentally spend a small fortune on art supplies I'd never use).

Dry pencil on wet gouache - who knew! Thank you, thank you 🙏
