Congrats on the exhibition! Doing things in the local community is the best 😊 I love that third sketch you posted with the colours, was that a 3 minute one as well?!
Thank you both! I think this one was 10 minutes, and it was on some paper which I had prepared with paint, which dictated the colour scheme. The dark green streak in the centre became the table, which made it quite distorted, so there was a lot of push and pull between what I was seeing and what was already on the paper.
Oh I love all your newsletters so much! And feel this IRL vs. online tension so deeply. Congrats on the Riverford gig—your illustrations for them turned out beautifully!
Thank you so much Rosalie! Yes, I guess that IRL/online thing is the struggle particular to our times. I often want to run away from it, but I like to believe that with enough deliberation both aspects can be perfectly aligned and complement each other. Not that I've fully managed that yet, but in my most optimistic moments I think maybe it's possible!
Thank you for this newsletter! I also feel finding opportunities in real life is much better than using social media. I hope to get started with new plans for my art soon after we moved. I enjoy your input and ideas a lot. Wishing you all of the best from South Africa!
Thank you so much, this is lovely to hear! Good luck with moving - I know how tiring it can be, but hopefully in your new place you'll find lots of inspiration.
Beautiful work for the exhibition as well as the dream client! I can’t believe I haven’t seen your website before, it’s full of such stunning work! My favorite in this newsletter are the imagined still life as they go perfectly from the realm of real to abstract. Can’t get enough of your Substack 😊
Ah that's so kind, thank you! I'm glad you liked those drawings, I'm finding it really exciting to start incorporate imagined elements. It opens up so many possibilities!
Your post came up after I wrote about the impact social media has on my artwork. I am trying to find a way of returning to build a local community and found what you wrote so interesting. I love your drawings and so pleased to have discovered this!
Thank you, Deborah! I just had a read of your post and I can definitely relate to that feeling of expectation that creeps in when sharing work online. I hope you can find ways to do things locally.
What a lovely newsletter! I absolutely agree that making opportunities for ourselves in the real world is so important, alongside all the online connections we make. It looks like a lovely exhibition. I love your 3 materials drawings and the RDS work you have done. Thank you for sharing

I do too. The lady with the tea, sitting in the green chair. The colours and marks are delightful.

I really enjoyed reading. I can so relate to how you were exhausted but energized at the same time. I like it when that happens!
Oh and I saw your beautiful work in the book “sketched out” (I was in there too!) that’s another wonderful offline thing🤍
Thank you so much, I love your work and I love reading your newsletter too. And yes!! We're next to each other in the book, that's so nice!
Happy to have this place to connect with you. I've always admired your work!

Thank you very much.
Reallu enjoyed reading this, there is a lot to be said for making things happen and moving out of your comfort zone, which I really admire.
